Sample Essay on Arthur Conan Doyle and His Fictional Universe

arthur-conan-doyle-essayMore than 60 mystery stories have been written by talented Arthur Conan Doyle. And due to his brilliant mind, we owe a stunning opportunity to enjoy Benedict Cumberbatch’s acting in the best TV show ever “Sherlock”!

The author was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburg (Scotland). Doyle’s family was a strict Irish-Catholic one and highly respected in the world of the art. However, Arthur’s father, Charles, was addicted to alcohol and but a few accomplishments to mention. As for his mother, Mary, she was an educated lady, absolutely passionate about reading. She was the one to tell her young boy unbelievably interesting and outlandish stories. Her endless imagination and wild tales had inspired young Arthur’s talent.

At the age of nine, Arthur had set off to England, where he would attend a preparatory school – Hodder Place, during the period between 1868-1870. After that, he entered the Stonyhurst College, where he spent the next five years.

After the graduation in 1876, Arthur Conan Doyle was expected to follow in his parents’ footsteps and master art. But they were surprised, when their son made a decision to pursue a medical degree at the University of Edinburg. That’s where he met Professor Joseph Bell, who inspired Doyle to create a well-known character of all times, Sherlock Holmes.

At the University, Arthur also met his classmates and future writing partners Robert Louis Stevenson and James Barrie. At the same time, he took his first step in writing, with “The Mystery of Sasassa Valley” story. Then was another story called “The American Tale”, successfully published in the “London Society.”

In 1880, Arthur returned to the University of Edinburg. Going back to the medical school, Arthur became seriously invested in “Psychic Religion” that he would later try to distribute in his written works.

In 1885, while Doyle was working hard on his career as a professional writer, he met and married Louisa Hawkins. That’s when he began to write the mystery novel called “A Tangled Skein”. Later, he renamed his work into “A Study in Scarlet” that was successfully published it in the “Beeton’s Christmas Annual” introducing Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to the world. “A Study in Scarlet” finally brought the recognition Arthur so desired.

Together with his first wife, Arthur moved to Upper Wimpole Street, where they had two kids. Unfortunately, Louisa died of tuberculosis in 1906. In 1907, Arthur Conan Doyle married young woman named Jean Leckie. With Jean he would have three children.

Even though Doyle was diagnosed with Angina Pectoris, he reluctantly turned down his doctor's' warnings. In 1929, Arthur set off to the Netherlands, to join in the spiritualism tour. He returned home suffering from intensive chest pain, almost bedridden. On July 7, 1930, Arthur Conan Doyle passed away in his garden with a flower in his hand…
